Hearing Assessment

Our work is carried out to strict BSA audiology standards. Hearing tests are comprehensive, including a case history, otoscopy (examination of external ear, canal and ear drum to look for wax, obstruction or other abnormalities) and pure tone audiometry to find out the quietest sounds you can hear. On a case-by-case basis, we may carry out tests to evaluate how you perceive speech, as well as speech in background noise. This information is then used to help inform our tailored recommendations. In the event that an abnormality is observed, a referral to your general practitioner may be sent. We work to BSHAA referral criteria.

Hearing Aids and Technology

Not all hearing aids are equal, and technology is in an astonishing period of progression. We have accounts with the leading manufacturers so you can have access to all of the latest technology. Discreet receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) and in-the-ear (ITE) options are available. Behind-the-ear (BTE) options are available for those who need a little more power. Our experienced audiologist will guide you through the options to help ensure you are always hearing your best.

If a hearing loss is identified, we may recommend a free hearing aid trial. This will allow you to experience our hearing aids, as well as allowing us to gather data to direct you towards the technology best suited to your lifestyle needs. We aim to provide data-based recommendations to help you find the correct product for your needs.

We keep a stock of hearing aids, so it may be possible to purchase hearing aids on the day of your appointment. A REM (or real ear measurement) is carried out on every hearing aid to ensure that you are receiving amplification tailored to your needs.

Ear Wax Removal

At Helix we have a clinical space purpose built for wax removal, equipped with a medical grade chair to ensure your comfort and a quality micro suction unit for effective wax management.

Micro suction is the preferred method of wax removal. It is recommended to use oil drops for around 5 days leading up to the appointment to ensure effective and safe removal of wax. We keep a supply of drops which can be purchased for a low cost. Alternatively, they can be bought at almost every pharmacy. If you suspect you have a perforated ear drum, it is not recommended to use oil drops.

Occasionally it may be recommended to manage wax with water in the form of irrigation. Irrigation is more controlled than out-dated syringing methods, making it safe if carried out in the correct manner. Irrigation is rarely the first choice for wax removal but may be recommended in certain circumstances.

Your safety and well-being is our priority. In the event the wax is too dry, or an abnormality is observed, a follow up appointment may be recommended.
